  • How to route GitHub notifications to different email addresses

  • How to change the email address GitHub notifications are sent to

  • By default, all GitHub notifications are sent to your primary email address

  • You can add as many secondary email addresses as you like

  • You can route notifications to different email addresses based on which organization owns the repo the notification relates to

  • This is great for separating work and personal notifications (especially if you’re going on vacation or a longer break like parental leave)

  • How to set up custom routing:

  • Go to your GitHub Notification Settings

  • Under “Default notifications email”, click “Custom routing”

  • On the “Custom routing” page, click “Add new route”

  • Choose the organization you want to route notifications for and the email address you want to route them to

  • Done!

  • You can add as many routes as you like

  • This only works if you are a member of other organizations

  • Your primary email address will continue to be used for notifications from your own repos and from any organizations you haven’t set up a custom route for

  • It’s worth taking the time to go through all of your notification settings and tune them to your liking. This excellent guide by Rob Bos provides a great walkthrough of how to do that.
