Invert, always invert

  • Solving a problem by inverting it (working backwards from the opposite outcome you want) often easier than solving the original problem
  • Instead of “how can I keep these pilots safe as a weather forecaster?”, try “how would I kill these pilots?” (cause the plane to ice up, cause the plane to run out of gas) and then avoid those hazards
  • How to avoid the opposite outcome?
  • Instead of “how to create a good marriage?”, try “how could I ruin my marriage?” and be fanatical about not doing those things
